Does my career affect my marriage?

On Behalf of The Law Firm of Michael S. Rothmel, LLC | Nov 23, 2022 | Divorce

Everyone knows that over half of marriages end in divorce over time, which may lead some to believe that there is not much anyone can do about divorce. After all, if it is just a flip of a coin, it is basically random, right? Maybe not.

Careers may have an impact

According to United States Census data collected by Zippia and gobankingrates.com, there are careers that have much higher divorce rates by age 30. By far, the highest rate is within our military. In fact, for First-Line Enlisted Military Supervisors, divorce rates are as high as 30% by 30. This is a shockingly high percentage when the next highest rate is nearly half as high.

Behind the high numbers

For First-Line Enlisted Military Supervisors, they have the worst of military service. For one, as first-line, they are first out. Second, as enlisted military personnel, they do not get the pay, benefits and recognition of their officer superiors. Yet, they often are tasked with many of the same responsibilities.

The triple whammy

This means that they spend months away from their Mount Holly, New Jersey, families without the equivalent pay, benefits or status of their peers. This can be a triple whammy as their family must deal with their absence for extended periods of time, in addition to financial constraints and the possible emotional repercussions of this treatment (in addition to the psychological effects of war). When we think about those in these positions, it is no wonder why military personnel and especially, First-Line Enlisted Military Supervisors, have such high divorce rates by age 30.

What does this all mean?

Perhaps, as a country, we should devote more time and resources to helping our brothers and sisters in arms. They spend their lives protecting us, and they deserve a chance at the American dream as well. However, for those not in military service, understanding that your career choice can impact your marriage can go a long way in mitigating those effects. After all, if we know that time away from the family can cause issues, we can better balance our lives to prioritize our Mount Holly, New Jersey, marriages.
